from last night when most people went to bed, hurricane watch now issued for the virginia coastline in addition to most of the north carolina. got a map to show you. we'll take another quick look at earl. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, that is under a hurricane watch. the watch has been extended. don't be surprised if later today, it is not extended further north up into maryland, maybe new jersey, up into southern new england later this afternoon. 125miles per hour. that makes it a category three storm. it has lost a little steam overnight. still a very formidable, very powerful hurricane. so tracking off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. it will be just off outer banks by overnight thursday into friday morning. so we'll see how things start to go downhill here over the next couple of days. for us, just a hot one. right now, we are in the 70s. 76 at reagan national. 70 in baltimore. 71 for you in ocean city. our forecast is easy. lots of sunshine. it will be hot this afternoon with highs back in the middle 90s. 95 intown. 96 in waldorf. 94, one of the coole

this morning gov. bob mcdonnell declared a state of emergency in virginia. a hurricane warning was issued for the entire north carolina coast within the hour. evacuation's are underway there already. the storm has battered beaches in the caribbean already. we will get the latest on the storm track from adam caskey in a moment. first, courtney robinson has more on a last-minute preparations up and down the east coast. >> hurricane earl churns up the atlantic, residents in the carolinas are bracing for a whatever this massive storm will bring. >> time for the big one. >> hurricane watches are in place in north carolina and virginia. vacationers began to evacuate the outer banks this morning and others are stocking up. on on long island people are securing supplies to battle begins. on cape cod there taking notes out of the water and lodging for dangerous rip currents in ocean city that it already had lifeguards disease. >> it was scary. i never thought i would be in that position. i was scared. but they got me on it. >> emergency crews worry about this. 135 mile per marlihour winds. thousan

been extended to include the virginia coastline. the storm has weakened. but let's go to vipir. first a quick look at hurricane watch. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, virginia, under a hurricane watch. don't be surprised if this doesn't get extended up into new jersey this afternoon. now to vipir. let's take a look the at storm -- at the storm, maximum winds 125, gusts over 140 and charging off to the north and west at 16 miles per hour. likely to keep this intensity as it approaching the carolina coastline overnight thursday and into friday morning and then charge up the coast during the day on friday. so watch this carefully over the next couple of days. locally we're doing fine. today is going to be another hot, sunny day with afternoon high temperatures back into the 90s. currently we're 76 degrees at reagan national. humidity 65%. winds shifting later out of the south here at about 5 miles per hour. but all in all, not a bad day. 95 degrees the afternoon high with a lot of sunshine. one more hot afternoon and then we'll start a cooldown which will include 80s this w

a bit, virginia beach is less than 100 miles from earl's approach of land and it escaped the high winds and flooding that hit the outer banks. >> still a light drizzle here in virginia beach but we are expecting the sun shortly. they are taking stock of the damage one tree down, eight people without power, no major flooding. call it dancing with earl. even at 3:00 a.m., people were out romancing the storm. in the dark, winds gusted to a high of maybe 20 miles an hour. the rain just sprinkled down. at daybreak, the adventurers took to the beach, even waltzing in the water. awed by the waves and imagine imagine industry that skirted the ocean front to offer a cares reinstead of a punch. >> it is something magic about being out there. >> very fresh. don't get it all the time. the wind feels great. >> reporter: by 7:30, the wind had shifted. earl was sucking it back out that way, and if you look at the swells, you can see how the wind was blowing the foam out to sea. the wind blew northeast in gusts as high as 40 miles an hour. the biggest threat now the waves an the tide which may eat up p
